Frankenmuth was founded in 1845 by a
group of fifteen German-Lutheran missionaries who came
to this area for the purpose of teaching Christianity to
the Chippewa Indians.
FRANKEN means the area where the settlers
came from and MUTH means courage in German. "Courage of
the Franconians" is what Frankenmuth is today. It is a
thriving city of nearly 5,000 residents who take great
pride in their German heritage. The German ethic is
portrayed in the city's architecture and well-tended
flowers and lush greenery.
